Why an orchestra?
The MCO was formally established replacing the Marlborough Youth orchestra in June 2014 with the objectives of benefiting the entire community; producing affordable orchestral concerts and providing the musicians in Marlborough, of all ages and levels of experience, with the opportunity to extend their skills and play in a variety of orchestral settings.

Ongoing development
In line with the MCO's objectives of upskilling its members, each year a series of workshops are held over Queen's Birthday weekend with guest tutors from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The aim is to improve our individual skills and ensemble musicality over four days of workshops, masterclasses, sectionals and tutti rehearsals culminating in an informal concert at the end of the weekend.
In addition, the MCO aim to provide other training sessions with visiting musicians throughout the year. |
Upbeat Development Orchestra
A recent development in line with the MCO's objectives of developing musicians, is to start a development orchestra for beginner musicians until they feel confident and ready to join in with the MCO. From all ages, on all instruments the Upbeat Development Orchestra meets the needs of local musicians who may have not played their instrument in many years or have only just begun. Practices are on Friday afternoons at the St Ninians Church Hall from 4.45 - 6.00pm. Please feel free to come along and join us.
